I am reading 350.org founder Bill McKibben’s “Eaarth” now. Paraphrasing the linked NYT review, ‘It is a world where…an oil company makes more money in three years “than any company in the history of money.” And it basically says it is too late to escape climate change unscathed. The effects of approaching 650 parts per million of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere have begun, and feedback effects will accelerate, irreversibly changing Earth into something vastly different…which McKibben calls Eaarth.
I am blown away by Bill McKibben’s composure, both when I saw him speak at Dickinson College last week, and in his tone in this book. He is describing how we blew (past tense) our chance to address what he first warned about in 1989, and how to best survive it. Imagine doing that in a level tone of voice?
