Bravo to the brave whistleblowers at PTC and in our government. Maybe your move will inspire others to come forward when they see this. The Turnpike is not the only place this happens; check out your own local and county leaders’ campaign finance reports.
pg 7 of the indictment: “According to several witnesses testifying before the Grand Jury, whichever political party in power gets 60 percent of the contracts or jobs, and the minority party receives 40 percent.”
pp 8-9: “money is the mother’s milk of politics, and these are prime opportunities to raise funds…if you were one of the chosen few who are given an opportunity to be an underwriter or to be a thing, typically what will happen is, you will miraculously see political contributions developed by the other end of the cycle…at every level, so you have – as I said, you have a whole group of professionals, lawyers, underwriters, et cetera, and then you have the whole engineering world.”
pg 9: “You’re constantly raising money. Some of the groups you raise money off of are lawyers. They are engineering firms. They are banks.”
PA Turnpike pays $3.2M for $496k worth of service…then $62.7M change order! “probably 1/100th of what is going on,” according to one cited source.
And what enabled this to occur? The same thing that always keeps YOUR government from doing what YOU want it to do: Campaign donations by the people making YOUR cash to those spending YOUR cash. If you think it doesn’t happen everywhere, you are dead wrong. WE need to remove non-constituent cash from the selection of our public servants, or nothing changes but the names.
